From the recording Red
"Red" is the third single off my upcoming full-length album "Big Dreams Little Earthlings" due out in February 2025. The song explores "masking" and the true feelings that are buried deep down.
In particular, "Red" takes on that which women are socialized to hide: anger, lust, empowerment. In a world that prefers women to be pleasant and comforting like beautiful flowers, this song is a fiery crash at the intersection of "you're prettier when you smile" and a bloodcurdling primal scream.
Lyrics
"Red"
words and music by Andrea Wittgens
Red
Sweetest rose you ever met
But too long in the hothouse you lose your head
That's what you get
The mind is sharp but the eyes are dead
Red
Skin to the touch to the lucky scar
Wait for the shatter, it's a work of art
The bones are bust but there's blood to the heart
The bones are bust but there's blood to the heart
Red
Golden threads round her neck
Now I'm about to do something I won't regret
That's what she said
And I believe every word she said
Red
Are you woman
Are you flower?
I feel too much I feel nothing at all
I am graffiti on your tower
It's not love
it's words on a wall
Red
Softest rose you never met
Teeny tiny thorns, I barely bled
They say the angels wept
Watch yourself that'll go to your head
Red
Buzz to the kill like a swarm bees
Living the lush life down in the weeds
Spit it out now, that sour sweet
It's the true lies that’ll make me sweat
You can watch me burn in infrared
Plastic petals round the bed
The rose is wild and I am -
Red
Are you woman
Are you flower?
I feel too much I feel nothing at all
I am graffiti on your tower
It's not love - it's words on a wall
